The guide

How to build a trade website that brings in work

Most people looking for a builder, plumber or electrician search on their phone, look at two or three websites and call the one that seems most trustworthy. A trade website doesn’t need to be fancy. It needs to show up locally, look professional and make getting in touch effortless. Here is how we plan and build websites for tradespeople.

1. Give every service its own page

A single “Services” page listing everything you do rarely ranks for anything. Separate pages work far better, because each one can match what people actually type into Google.

  • One page per service you want more of: kitchen fitting, loft conversions, boiler installation, emergency plumbing, consumer unit upgrades, EV charger installation, flat roofing and so on.
  • Each page follows the same pattern: what the job involves, how long it usually takes, a rough “from” price or what affects the price, photos of similar jobs and short FAQs.
  • Emergency work gets its own page with your phone number at the top, response times and the hours you cover.

2. Show where you work

Customers search for “electrician in Hove” or “plumber near me”, so your website has to make your service area obvious.

  • A clear list of the towns and postcodes you cover on your home page and contact page.
  • Area pages for your main towns, each with genuinely local detail such as recent jobs nearby, rather than the same text with the town name swapped.
  • A Google Business Profile set up as a service-area business, so you can appear on the map without showing your home address.
  • The same business name, phone number and details on your website, Google and directories like Checkatrade, MyBuilder or Yell.

3. Build trust before the first call

You’re asking people to let you into their home, so proof matters more than clever wording.

  • Registrations and accreditations: your Gas Safe registration number for gas work, NICEIC or NAPIT membership for electrical work, TrustMark, FMB or other trade bodies you belong to. Customers can check these, so show them clearly.
  • Insurance and guarantees: public liability insurance and any workmanship guarantee you offer.
  • Real photos of your work, your van and your team. Stock photos of smiling builders don’t win jobs.
  • Genuine reviews linked to Google or Checkatrade, where customers know they can’t be faked.

4. Make it fast and easy on a phone

Someone with a leaking pipe won’t wait for a slow website to load. Google also uses real-world speed (Core Web Vitals) as a ranking signal. We aim for the main content to load in under 2.5 seconds on mobile, and we add a fixed bar at the bottom of the screen for one-tap call, WhatsApp and email.

5. Make quotes easy to ask for

  • A short quote form: name, phone, postcode, the job and an optional photo upload.
  • A “Get a quote” button on every page, and your phone number in the header.
  • An honest note about how quickly you reply, such as “we reply within one working day”.
  • Enquiries sent straight to your email and, if you like, your phone.

6. Keep claims accurate

Your website counts as advertising, so the UK advertising code (CAP) applies. Avoid claims you can’t back up, like “cheapest in Sussex” or “fully guaranteed” without saying what the guarantee covers. Only show accreditation logos for schemes you’re a current member of.

Trade website checklist

  • One page per service, with photos and “from” prices or price guidance
  • Towns and postcodes you cover, plus a Google Business Profile
  • Gas Safe, NICEIC, NAPIT, TrustMark or other memberships shown
  • Insurance and guarantee details
  • Real photos of your work, van and team
  • Genuine reviews linked to Google or Checkatrade
  • Mobile load time under 2.5 seconds, with tap-to-call
  • Short quote form with photo upload

FAQ

Questions we often get asked

I’m a sole trader. Do I really need a website?

Most customers check a tradesperson online before they call, even when they’ve been recommended. A simple website with your services, areas, photos and reviews makes you look established and helps you get found on Google.

Can you write the pages for me?

Yes. You fill in a 10-minute brief about your services and the areas you cover, and we write every page in plain English. You check and approve everything before the site goes live.

Can customers send photos of the job?

Yes. We can add photo upload to your quote form, so customers can show you the problem before you visit.

Will I show up on Google for my area?

We set up your pages, titles and local business details for the towns you cover, and help you connect your Google Business Profile. Rankings take time and depend on competition, but a fast, well-structured site gives you the best start.

Can I show my Checkatrade or Google reviews?

Yes. We can display your rating and link to your review profiles, so customers can read them where they know they’re genuine.
